A Michigan agent has been fined $25,000 and had his insurance license revoked after an investigation revealed he had been creating and selling fake auto insurance certificates, the state’s insurance regulators say.
The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) said it began an investigation after receiving a complaint alleging Dillen Leonard of Flint, Michigan, was preparing, issuing and delivering fake insurance certificates to customers at the Flint-based agency where he was employed.
DIFS said the investigation revealed that Leonard issued fake insurance certificates for at least 29 people. Each certificate was produced in a document that was configured to look like a legitimate insurance certificate with an incorrect start date and an incorrect expiration date in the organization it was working for.
DIFS also found that every customer, especially Leonard, received fake insurance to register a vehicle with the Michigan State Secretary.
From 4 January 2016 to 1 August 2016, Leonard served as a licensed manufacturer responsible for the Advasure Insurance Agent.
